WHY RESOLUTIONS & GOALS LEAD TO FAILURE
Every January everyone starts talking about their new resolutions, goals and habits.
There are people who believe that resolutions only work when we are committed and we engage our willpower.
Others who believe we need to follow SMART goals and have specific guidelines about how to set these kinds of goals.
In fact, I was trained to reach goal-setting this way. However I have since come to believe that goals and resolutions actually lead to FAILURE.
What??
Yep, I said it.
I believe that resolutions and goals lead to failure. Because they become another HUGE list of "To Do's" that we super-impose in our lives and on top of the other "to do's" already there.
What we end up with is a huge degree of overwhelm, which leads to procrastination, withdrawal, a drop of energy and a huge degree of avoidance.
Willpower only takes us so far because we have a limited amount of it to use in a single day and using it drains your energy, further contributing to your sense of overwhelm, failure and disappointment.
And if this wasn't enough we have been socialized to shame ourselves for not being able to activate this willpower to bring about the successs we want to see.
How are you to succeed when you are activating these emotional states?
In fact, new research has proven that it is not what we think, but HOW we feel that impacts our actions and our eventual level of success.
Therefore it would be quite impossible to a chore success when your feeling T state is overwhelm, procrastination, disappointment and shame.
So what SHOULD YOU DO INSTEAD?
Try doing these things:
DREAM-
As a society somehow we have forgotten to dream, to let go of the "how to" and "strategizing" and give free reign to our creativity to create the vision and dream that we want about our life.
Allowing our right brain to take over and engage the magic of dreaming, creating vision boards, and opening space in our minds and our lives to dream is at the seat of all imagination and innovation.
We know we cannot solve problems with the same mindset with which we have created them, yet we continue to do this…we continue to cut down on our time to play, to dream, to imagine, and to fantasize.
Without this…what will get you up in the morning? a list? a Goal-sheet? I don’t think so!
I think it will be a grand vision for where you will be, what you will be, what you will experience and how you will impact the world that will get you up in the morning! So DREAM…
SET INTENTIONS-
- Intentions create innervations in our brain and energetic waves that communicate to your entire system the reality that you want to manifest. It is said that we create everything we do TWICE: Once in our minds, and the other in the physical world. The intention setting becomes a type of ritual that anchors our dreams and visions into a more grounded reality that we want to manifest. The more specific our dreams and visions are the better. However our intentions can also be set in a more general way...
CAN BE DONE AS A THEMATIC INTENTION:
For example last year my THEME was: EXPANSION- and expand I did. I took all kinds of courses, challenges, travelled, joined a mastermind, and expanded the systems and offerings through my business.
This year, my THEME is: "EASY MANIFESTATION”, and I don’t exactly know what this will bring, but I am focused on two things here: The 1st is a feeling…how I want to feel and how I want my life and work to feel “EASY”. For the last couple years (or decades) I’ve believed that it was hard work that would get you to success and I WORKED HARD! I was successful, but I am at a different place in my life, a place where I understand the way the universe works a little better, and that pushing and hard, are not necessarily the way I want my life to be, or that things manifest, so I’m setting this intention.
The second part is what I want to see HAPPEN- “manifest my dreams” in a real way. I am also leaving it open, because I want my dreams of “something better” and want to allow the universe to support me in every possible way there is, even in ways that I may not currently see. I am opening to receive widely and to encourage others to do the same.
FOCUS ON HOW YOU WANT TO FEEL
In a similar vein, focusing on how you want to FEEL, is one of the most important aspects of this exercise. As we have now enough evidence that it is not thoughts in particular that create the energetic charge to make things happen, but our state of BEING. How we feel will impact how we interact with the rest of the world and hence our bottom line results.
Want to have abundance in your life? Start by practicing and feeling GRATITUDE at the core level…be grateful for everything, and everyone and every situation that is gifted to you. Express it openly and feel the rest aligning with this feeling.
Want to be successful? Start by practicing joy, happiness, and optimism. We know now that happiness is the biggest correlate to success and not because it follows it, but rather because it precedes it. Does’t make sense? Well imagine having all your dreams come true (step 1)…really feeling excitement and joy, happiness and fulfillment over this happening (step 3), would the actions you take towards your dreams are more focused, are you more perseverant and more resilient when things are not going as well? I wager that you are…because you have already experienced success and you will know in your body, in your cells in your entire being, that it is possible. So you will take risks, you will go the extra mile, and you will make it happen!
FOCUS ON WHO YOU WANT TO BE or BECOME
Equally, focusing on who you want to BE keeps you excited and on your toes about what you are thinking, what you are doing and how you are showing up.
Think of 3 words that describe HOW or better yet WHO you want to BE…And write it down on your mirror…set reminders on your phone…set alarms…and next time it goes off ask yourself are you being…inspiring, uplifting, and courageous? (my words), and if the answer is not…then ask why not? and what can I do right now to become inspiring, uplifting and courageous…
Because it is through our daily actions, that we BECOME someone…
BUILD POSITIVE HABITS
This is where we can actually take all this stuff and make it a thing we do…
Build routines and habits into your day that support the reality of the dreams you want to manifest. Want to become more peaceful, enlightened and focused…then committee to start a daily meditation practice.
Build it into your daily routine…
Attach it and anchor it to something you already to so you are reminded by association…it can be brushing your teeth, getting dressed or peeing…I don’t care…whatever it will work for you, just make it happen.
Build a support system that will keep you accountable IF and only IF, you need this sort of thing. Research has shown that if you are intrinsically motivated to do something and you build extrinsic motivation and support (i.e. accountability your intrinsic (internal) motivation will diminish. On the contrary if you are struggling to have intrinsic motivation, having extrinsic support will increase it, so do what works for you). Maybe it is just someone to go with you to the gym; or someone to tell about what you are doing, or simply someone that says “great job!”. Whatever that is for you, put it into place.
Change one thing at a time. Most people set out to do 100 things at once, goal sheets are a mile long, and nothing ever happens. Limit to 3 big things. Determine which one you will start with, so you can feel successful before you add more complexity and challenge to your life.
Do you want to lead a LEGENDARY LIFE? Do you want to become a high performer and make the impact you desire to make?
Then begin to pay attention to these "simple" concepts, as not the philosophical knowledge or them, but the PRACTICAL APPLICATION of them, EVERY DAY, is what will lead to mastery, high performance, success and creating a legacy in your life!
These are simply the beginning steps... and then, yes strategize and plan out HOW to make it all happen…but without these pre-requisite steps, all the planing becomes drudgery…FUELED BY HEART AND VISION, rather than a checklist!
